Adaptxt – the Indic Text Input Tool for Handhelds and Tablets

In this tech-talk session, I want to talk about an application that has been a great help bridging the language gap and digital divide across the globe.

Chances are that you have already heard of Adaptxt. Adaptxt is an acronym formed out of two words of “Adapt” and “Text”. The idea is that the tool offered under the aegis of Adaptxt is adaptable to the text. And it comes really true to its name.

Adaptxt is a keyboard cum dictionary application made particularly for mobile devices and tablet computers. As you are already aware, almost all of these devices come with only one language input tool i.e. English. That is, if you want to write something on these devices in a language other than English, chances are that you will not find any way to type type because your language is not supported by the device manufacturer. Device manufacturers like Nokia, Samsung, Micromax or several other companies that come with different software platforms, take it granted that the people’s basic need is to be able to type in English and therefore they provide support just for that language. Developing support for other languages requires much more than just localization of the software platform. It requires a lot of feedback from native language experts (linguists) as well as other resources. Therefore features like being able to type in Hindi or Bengali or Tamil is not available by default on mobiles or tablets that come with Android, Symbian or Windows Mobile platforms. If you want to be able to type in Hindi or other numerous languages, you will have to resort to external softwares and install them separately on your own.

Adaptxt holiday theme dictionary and keyboard featured on ZDNet

blog_appnews_blog 2Matt Miller at ZDNet reviewed our winter theme release dictionary and keyboard in a recent article.Matt wrote that he plans to show off his festive keyboard at get-togethers and holiday parties this weekend. But not only is the winter theme eye-catching, “Holiday words can also be turned on so that the Christmas dictionary words appear faster in the predictive engine. It is as simple as swiping across the space bar to switch between the dictionaries you has loaded as well.”

Since our background is in linguistic science as well as mobile application development, we decided that a holiday theme keyboard could not be released without an intelligent predictive dictionary to match. What would you like to see as our next seasonally-themed dictionary and keyboard? A Super Bowl theme in team colors with a football dictionary, or a Valentines’ Day red and white theme with a dictionary full of the sweetest sayings?

blog_appnews_blog 1Hello! One of our New Year resolutions here at KeyPoint is to blog more and shares our opinions and perspectives on current mobile industry issues and innovations with you.

Before we dive deeper in to a serious discussion, let’s first enjoy the holiday season by sending thoughts and sharing memories with family and friends. By using a keyboard app that enables next word predictions using artificial intelligence, users can slow down how fast they type while composing notes and texts more quickly and end up being more productive with little effort. And just in time for the holiday season, Adaptxt has released a festive and intelligent keyboard app in a new holiday theme dictionary and colored keyboard.

Included in the Christmas dictionary are commonly used Yule-time-themed words and phrases. For example, if you type “merry,” Adaptxt will suggest the next word you want to input is “Christmas.” Texting your holiday greeting is now easy! The keyboard appearance has been changed to a traditional red and green, overlaid with images of snowflakes, wrapped gifts and more.

Adaptxt is available for free by updating Adaptxt to the latest version via Google Play and the Christmas dictionary is available for download from the Adaptxt Add-On Manager.
